He also covered the 1968 Rose Bowl, the 1972 Munich Olympics, IU's perfect basketball season in 1976, subsequent national championships in 1981 and 1987, five Olympics, and hundreds of college and high school athletes and sports events. He was named Indiana Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association 17 times. He received the 1995 Curt Gowdy Award, the 1996 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's Silver Medal Award, and the Bert McGrane Award. He was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1997 and has authored 14 books, including his memoir, six on IU basketball and Bob Knight, and two on Cook Group Founder Bill Cook. Bob Hammel had a unique career and lasting relationships with many coaches and athletes, but his coverage of former Indiana coach Bob Knight is most visible in this fantastic collection of sports and IU memories.
